Sweat proof makeup, the West Valley show and more

Hello and Happy Monday!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the West Valley bridal expo this Saturday. The show was awesome and went off without a hitch!

The "Rocka-Barba-billy-ella" makeup was amazing and it photographed amazing! Oh, I didn't take my camera...darn it! Doh!

Though, Ventola Photography did snap some shots and that is what you see here. There is a slide show on the myspace page for you to enjoy too!

Now, makeup wise...we are coming into the Fourth of July holiday, (which I happen to love) and it's going to be hot, sweaty, intense sun and in general...muggy for you. How do you keep your beauty intact?

1. Use a self tanner starting today made for the face, such as Neutrogena's gradual face tanner. This way, you have even skin tone and color and won't have to worry about any kind of foundation. Just blot your shine off and maybe stipple on some powder if you absolutely must!

2. Use a stain on your lips and cheeks. I love Benefit Benetint and Lorac Sheer Wash. This gives the face and mouth some definition and you can swipe on the gloss of your choice to finish your mouth.

3. I recommend a "water resistant" mascara such as Sue Devitt Studios that will stay on through the sweaty and muggy weather.

4. Think creme shadows if you want to dress up your eyes. I know, you are thinking "it will crease!", well, because it moves a bit, you can easily readjust and blend your creme shadow as you need.

5. Fragrance! Keep it light and clean, nothing to strong so it won't mingle with sweat and sunscreen.

That's really the beauty tip... please put your sunscreen on and re-apply ever 4 hours if you are out of the water, and immediately following any water or sporty activity that may sweat off the product.

Enjoy the fireworks!

Check your skin! Neutrogena skin health and you!

The Neutrogena® Partnership for Skin Health, a public service initiative that partners with organizations and individuals to educate, promote advancements and explore solutions for skin health, has tapped actress Malin Akerman (“27 Dresses,” “The Heartbreak Kid”) to educate consumers in a viral video about self-examination for skin cancer prevention. As the #1 dermatologist recommended skincare brand and the leader in sun protection technology, Neutrogena® is committed to educating and empower individuals on the importance of self-examinations to prevent skin cancer and promote early detection.

About the Video:
The viral video, starring Akerman, shows a couple performing skin self checks to demonstrate how easy it is to engage with a loved one for early detection to prevent skin cancer. The goal of the video is to empower consumers to take control of their health, encourage both men and women to not only check themselves for skin cancer, but also their significant others, and to remind people to visit a dermatologist at least once a year for a full body scan.

“This video and message is something I have a passion for because I understand the importance of checking your skin for suspicious moles,” says Malin Akerman. “I recently had a suspicious mole removed on my face; I noticed it was changing shape and asked my dermatologist to examine it. I was one of the luckier ones.”

Did You Know?
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US; one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during his or her lifetime! Neutrogena® Partnership for Skin Health set out to create a viral video that would reach a wide-scale audience, including both men and women. Having a spouse check your moles (especially on areas of your body that are harder for you to see and reach) aids in the early detection of skin cancer.

You can view the video here:

...Okay, it's me writing here. Everything above is from the Neutrogena partnership for skin health and I reposted it in it's entirety and with out my usual commentation because I think the information needs to stay intact, as sent.
If you live in Arizona like me, the skin cancer danger is high because we get so much "incidental" exposure by going in and out of stores, cars, home, you name it! It's not just about sitting out in your bikini, covered in baby oil mixed with iodine and holding up a foil wrapped cardboard reflector on your neck and chin.
Everyday sunscreen is a must! Use an ounce to cover your entire body if you are going out to "play" and swim. Give it up to 30 minutes to be absorbed and be it's most effective.
On a daily basis, mix some sunscreen with your hand lotion so your hands are protected while yo uare driving. Ladies, especially us because our hands show our age way before our faces do.
Remember to pull your facial moisturizer down over your neck and chest because that area gets alot of sun too!
In short, you will still get the necessary vitamin D and absorption, which is recommended at 15 minutes of sun exposure a day, with the use of sunscreen throughout the day.
Remember, check your skin!

Battery Operated mascara for the bold and the lazy

Makeup is changing history again!
Technology and science keep advancing society and makeup is on the cutting edge of it!
There are some new mascara products coming out and just may be a fit for thrill seekers and lazy eye makeup appliers.
This is the stuff of science fiction and what I would think Japan would come out with first, but nope, good ol’ Estee and Lancome are battling it out to corner the market in battery operated mascara.
There is obviously a market for the product because two of the world’s largest cosmetic conglomerates, Estee Lauder and Lancome, are launching their own versions of the mechanical mascara.
Reports are coming out that Estee Lauder will launch first, in mid-July, with their battery-operated, vibrating TurboLash All Effects Motion Mascara. Retailing for $30, the mascara will vibrate at 125 micropulses per second. Just what is a micro pulse? I don’t know, but will soon find out!
Lancome is creating a similar mechanical product, called Oscillation, that vibrates at no fewer than 7,000 vibrations per minute.
Okay, I’m thinking there are going to be benefits, such as the massaging effect of the motion may increase circulation to the eyelash follicle and result in thicker lashes? Like a Sonicare toothbrush is so good for your teeth and gums because of the manipulation it does.
Either way, the launch dates are weeks away, so get your cash or credit in hand and get ready to be the first to report on this bleeding edge of cosmetic technology!
If you happen to know more about this, or have a sample …please share!

The Flap about Flip Flops

The Flap about Flip Flops and Your Feet

Ladies, in Arizona where I live, the flip flop in its many incarnations is worn throughout the year. Even to some formal occasions I have seen both men and women wearing a version of the flip flop.Pedicure salons abound in the greater Phoenix area because of the demand for well coiffed heels and toes.

I personally, own several pairs of flip flops from the simple black rubbers to the decorated mini heels with flowers hanging off of them. Right now for the summer of 2008, the roman sandal or a multi-tie lace up over the foot and around the ankle is very popular.

Below I have quoted a foot doctor and his professional opinion on foot care and what kind of damage our beautiful shoes do to our feet. I read it and can agree to limit my heel and flop wearing time to a minimum, but let’s define…what’s minimum? If I am not in flip flops, I’m in heels, and only when running my daily 5K am I in sneakers.

"New York City podiatrist Dr. Oliver Zong warns that flip flops and flats may do more harm than good! According to Dr. Zong, “instead of mimicking the movement of walking barefoot and allowing the foot to naturally roll from heel to toe, a soft-soled shoe actually creates more work for the muscles of the foot therefore tiring them out faster.”

During the summer Dr. Zong often sees patients with symptoms of heel pain, plantar fasciitis, or tendonitis of the various muscles of the foot. In fact, a new study published by Auburn University has found that flip flop wearers took shorter steps and their heels hit the ground with less vertical force than when the same walkers wore athletic shoes. According to Dr. Zong, “a soft-soled shoe generally does not allow the foot to naturally roll from heel to toe since it generally has a softer midfoot – and the lack of support will generally cause more injury then good.”

The study also found that people wearing flip flops don’t raise their toes up as much as the legs swing forward to take a step. Dr Zong says that soft-soled shoes call for more gripping of the toes during the gait cycle, and it can cause overuse of the tendons and lead to injury. According to Dr. Zong, to remedy these problems, he recommends patients return to support shoes such as sneakers with a 1-2 inch heel to take the pressure off the plantar fascia (a ligament typically injured and causes heel pain). In the long run, Dr. Zong recommends limiting flip flop use to a few hours a day – the same prescription for women wearing high heels. "

So what’s a gal to wear? What other shoe choice is there really that is fashionable and lovely to look at? Shoes and handbags are my favorite accessory right next to the perfect lip gloss.

I believe, walk softly in the Lord and where a high heel, especially one with a platform. I’ll try to limit my wearing to a minimum…but until it’s boot weather, I think I’ll be barefoot.

Remember, when getting your pedicures to look over the facility for cleanliness, high hygiene practices and use of sanitizers. If you can bring your own personal pedi-tools for use on yourself by the nail technician, you have a better chance of staying fungus and infection free.
All salons have to post their health department inspection list, if there is anything less than an A, don’t use that salon. An “A” rating allows up to 16 infractions. Just think what below an A allows!

Be safe in your barefeet, your flip flops and high heels, just keep it to a minimum!

Happy Monday: get your Pin-Up on

June is almost over...the Fourth of July Holiday is almost here! I love what it represents, though in Arizona, it's way too hot to sit out and watch fireworks.

Makeup wise: I have a special "Fourth of July" celebration look coming at the end of the week for you.

There is a fresh batch of product reviews and giveaways coming too!

As for this Monday:
I want to recommend another makeup artist for your Rockabilly/Glamour/Pin-Up 40's inspired makeup: her name is Angel Jagger and her work is amazing.
check it out here:

See, I'm getting the final touches down on my 1970's Barbarella/1940's Pin-Up inspired look for the West Valley Fashion Show where I am helping couture bridal designer JennyVi with her fashion show.

While searching around the internet I came across Angel Jagger's site and fell in love!
See it for yourself, then come out on Saturday and see my mix of makeup looks on the bride models.

I really want to perfect my forties hair rolls and use of hair rats...more on that later. Right now what I am focusing on is getting a mix of the Barbarella big, messy by lovin' hair look with the innocent lip, heavy liner/big lash and shadow down to a quick step that I can get half a dozen models ready in record time.

Phew! Plus, I'll be teaching a segment while I'm there and using a lucky bride from the audience to demo on!

So for you gals at home, who want to get your Barbarella look on ( no, the remake of the movie is on hold, and last I heard, Robert Rodriguez is not directing meaning girlfriend Rose McGowan is not starring. That's Hollywood!)

to create the look at home: fill your hair roots with volumizing gel and spray some volulmizing spray through the ends: set on large hot rollers and dry.

Switch to your makeup: you'll need a smooth semi-matte foundation, with pale blush in a neutral tone, a very neutral mouth with low shimmer, and heavy eyeliner in a deep purple shade. The eyeliner does not wing out in a cat eye, but stays close to the shape of the eye, it's just a thick line. Add some short, full false eyelashes to complete the look.

Do full arched brows, with a two tone muted shadow of light purple along the lid and a soft highlighting pink on the brow.

Finish with taking your hair out, teasing it up on the crown, smoothing over with a finishing brush, then shaking it you've been havin' that lovin' feelin'.

That should give you a modern, updated, Barbarella look. Some of you may where that to work, to the gym, out on a date, or to drop your toddler off at school.

Either way, I"m sure you look gorgeous!

L'Oreal Skin Genesis and woes the heat

Today I did an event with the L'Oreal Skin Genesis line of serum and spf 15 UVA/UVB daily moisturizing lotion.
It's going for $23.99 with a free travel size serum at the local Costco in your area.
Now what L'Oreal is saying about the product and why it's different is the 100% naturally derived Pro-Xylane...a new superiour molecule that comes from a beachwood tree and is easily penetrated intto the skins upper layer which boosts the renewal activity.

I sampled it today, though do not have a size that I can run through the usual battery of intense Makeup University Inc trials to see if a product meets our standards.

What I can tell you is:
it's light, no scent, absorbs quickly, would make a great canvass for your liquid foundation...though caution: I did not get to test this product with mineral or powder foundations so I have no true information on texture, slip, feel, coverage and wearability here to report.

If you have experienced this line and have something to share with all of us, please post a comment.

Otherwise, I think it's a safe bet for your twenty bucks and a gallon of gas price range that you would have a good anti-aging duo.

Enjoy your weekend and stay tuned for Monday...

Kirkland Signature by Borghese info you could use

Thank God it’s Friday!Let’s party! Or as my toddler says “ let’s put our party pants on”.
Here in Arizona we are on another heat advisory for the day. Nice.
First let me thank you for your continued support of Makeup University inc!
I appreciate you! The new printing of Bridal Makeup DIY is coming in 2008, yes, you can still get a copy of it online, for those destination brides that just can’t wait.

A few weeks back I did a promotion with Kirkland Signature by Borghese products and fell in love. I can leak the report that yes, a product promo for you the reader is coming soon, very, very soon…
IN the meantime, get your Costco card in hand and head out and try the goods on the kiosk found in the HABA, otherwise known as the “health and beauty aisle” in your local Costco store.
Everything from skincare with anti-aging properties is available along with a partnering cosmetic.
There are free gifts with purchase included in most of the bubble packs. Like the spf20 foundation comes with a free three toned concealer and application brush. The concealer includes a corrective yellow, a highlighting and a contouring creamy concealer. It spreads easily, absorbs, is lightweight on the skin and I think you’ll like the results.

My favorite thing about the sheer foundation is that for Arizona, it’s easy to blend one pump of the Kirkland Signature by Borghese foundation with one pump of the anti-aging moisturizer for a “do it yourself” tinted moisturizer.

Which in heat advisory weather, you want some coverage, some sun protection and something that if it gets sweaty; can easily be blended back into place.

The bronzer and translucent powder both come with free gwp’s that are retractable brushes which are perfect for traveling and your everyday purse. Now the translucent powder is soft, and gives a matte-like finish but is not powdery, talc’y (is that a word?) and won’t cake up on you when you get sweaty.

If you have been passing this kiosk wanting to try it before you buy it, on the weekends, most stores have an event demo artist standing there with samples to give away for free, for you to try. They range from the full skin care line to each product in the color line.
I think you should try this now and fall in love because this Borghese is the same as what you by in Saks Fifth Avenue, or Bloomingdales, just a heck of a lot cheaper and it’s a great product.
Try it! You may like it!
I’ll keep you posted on all the product freebies that are coming up…stay tuned!

JennyVi, MaricopaTV, and then some

Oops! It was a taped show yesterday, and so the airing of the segment featuring me and JennyVi's couture bridal gowns will actually be shown in September! Wow, that in one way is a long way away and in another, it isn't.

Well, you can still visit us at the free bridal event at the West Valley Art Museum which is hosting the bridal expo.

To watch programs on Maricopa TV, visit, or Cox channel 115.

I used the Adesign brushes in the segment and my findings are lovely. The brushes are soft to the touch, light weight, the ergonomic molding of the handle makes it balance beautifully in my hand.

Which means more control of blending and shadow application.
I have the 4 eye makeup brushes though there are many more to choose from for all cosmetic applications,
visit the website to get a good luck at what else Adesign makeup brushes have to offer.

More from the beauty trenches tomorrow...

Drink your way to youth and the brown cow challenge

TOKI results and AVEDA

My faithful friends, it has been one of the longest tests that Makeup University has done…I personally tested the TOKI product of drinkable youth powder and saw some lovely results.
First, it tastes great. It’s a light lemony flavor, so I put it into my iced tea. Though here’s the catch, read the instructions, especially the part about don’t mix in cold liquids. Why? Because it clumps.

That’s okay, I just drank my clumps. So when you get yours, mix your tea and TOKI, then add ice after it is completely dissolved.

One of my favorite results of this TOKI test is that sure, my skin is firmer looking throughout the face and neck, but; it’s the lightness of my facial skin that is most interesting in the test results.

See in Arizona, you can’t help but get sun on you resulting in a sun tan because of the intensity and duration of the sun here. Well, with my everyday facial sunscreen and the TOKI my face has retained a lightness to it.

To get your TOKI, visit their website at
To get your FREE TOKI…email me your name, where you are reading from, why you want to try TOKI, and how you got to the blog…a winner will be picked in seven days, randomly out of all the entries that have been received by midnight the seventh night.

Now…stay tuned for the AVEDA report.

Today I visited MoodSwings salon in Tempe for the AVEDA hair model event they are having. I know what you are thinking, I’m not a model. Even so, I do have hair and I’m looking for a story here…
After all, I did survive the last hair nightmare, my scalp has healed and I’m ready to try a salon stylist again. I figure, I may as well make a sport of it and write the beauty truth along the way. If I’m selected, I’ll take a before and after picture. This should take care of the continual request for an updated photo; which the only reason why I don’t post one or get new headshots is because I can’t stand the way my hair looks.

It has morphed from Mogli the jungle boy to a brown cow concoction. See! That’s why I don’t photograph it. I don’t want it recorded for posterity.

If you are in the Tempe area and need a great salon, this is one to try because it’s full service and is a licensed AVEDA center. I love the philosophy, the company and most importantly the integrity of the AVEDA products.

Today being Wednesday, I am on MARICOPA TV with JennyVi the bridal couture designer, watch it! Cox 115

If you don’t see us there, we’ll both be at the West Valley Bridal Expo on June 28th.
Now, if you are in the New York City area and reading the blog, please let me know by email because I have the opportunity to giveaway a luxury dinner gift certificate. Are you hungry?

REVLON super discounts...Jean Nate for gosh sakes!

Hello and Happy Monday fellow beauty lovers!

I like how the media is still saying that we are NOT in a recession. Do these people not buy gas or groceries?

So let's focus on the positive: the REVLON makeup warehouse here in the Phoenix area has a huge stock of goodies just for you and discounts that are so far below retail.

The calendar is posted for you to check out the days that have the products on deeper discounts that you want...or head on over for "happy hour" makeup style.

****NEWS FLASH...the REVLON warehouse is having a special discount added on top of the already published specials just for Makeup University readers...stay tuned for it to be posted later in the week. You will need to print that blog page and take it in with you to get the discount.***
One of the things I love best about the discount warehouse is the fragrance selection! They have so many choices in perfume ( remember, I love perfume. I wear it in layers so I have a big cloud of it floating about me, just like Pigpen the Peanuts gang character. Instead of dirt, it's perfume!)
There are some selections, such as Jean you remember that commercial from the 70's? Did I just date myself? IF you have classic fragrances that you are looking for, chances are they are here. If you had a discountinued or seasonal product that you loved and is now gone, chances are, it's here!
The REVLON cosmetic warehouse is worth the trip. Pack your car full of friends and head over for the savings and girl time.
Please call ahead with any questions you have, check the schedule for their hours of operation, and remember, no kiddies under 16 on the weekdays!
Enjoy and see you tomorrow with TOKI and a report from my trip to the AVEDA hair modeling.

Yu-Be! Try it!

What it is: A concentrated glycerin moisturizing cream.
What it is formulated to do:Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream soothes and moisturizes dry skin. This glycerin-based cream is enriched with vitamin E, vitamin B2, and camphor. It has a uniquely high glycerin content and absorbability achieved through a special manufacturing process which makes Yu-Be so effective.
Use it to smooth rough, dry patches on hands, elbows, knees, and feet. It softens and reduces tough calluses, including hard, cracked heels, and helps heal and prevent split cuticles. It replenishes lost moisture from water damage or frequent hand washing, helps heal and minimize scarring from burns, and protects and moisturizes skin exposed to cold, wind, and water.
What else you need to know:Invented in 1957 by a Japanese pharmacist, Yu-Be is the #1 selling medicated, vitamin-enriched skincare cream in Japan today.
Yu-Be is safe and effective for the whole family. The non-greasy formula absorbs quickly and stays locked in for hours. It contains no artificial colors, fragrances, oils, or petroleum.
Okay, you can get this at Sephora now and why I post this info from their site is that while I was in Japan, I used this and loved it. Sure I brought home a tub, but...a tub only lasts so long and once it was gone, there was no way to get it again.
Well, sure I could have traveled back to Japan. It's affordable and amazing. Try it, you'll like it and won't go back to store brand after experiencing it! Enjoy!

AminoGenesis Perfect Reflection...not just for athletes

Amino acids for the skin…not just for the sport athlete and super dieter!
Makeup University has received a sampling of the Aminogenesis skin care line: eye and anti-aging serum.

I personally tried both and have a lovely report for you:
The eye crème is gentle, light, emollient, and absorbs quickly into the skin. This is not the traditional thick sticky eye crème but a thin, silky milky concoction that glides over the eye area. I did not experience “morning after eye care” puffiness. I think with continued use, this product could produce some serious results!

Now, I also tested the 17 Amino Acid filled “Perfect Reflection” which is a serum!

Remember, serums are treatments, like a vitamin for the skin, and are to be used first with a moisturizer over it. Keeping in the system of the family of products tends to work better than mixing and matching serums with crèmes with washes and moisturizers.

The Perfect Reflection went in to the skin quickly, and smoothly, didn’t bead or ball up, nor did it take a lot of massaging to work it into the skin. I pulled the product down the neck line and over the décolleté to keep the anti-aging process moving south as body parts go that direction too.

It has a light scent, and I think what I am smelling is the “aminos”. It’s not citrusy, but amino’ey.

Yes, I think I just made up a word!
In short, I enjoyed the products and recommend them for the anti-aging skin lover who enjoys a system of products and is looking for maximum results from a product they have invested in.

You can find this line: at Hi-Health, Pure Beauty and in Arizona boutiques such as J Julian Fine Skin Care of Cave Creek, Hairshapers in Gilbert, AZ Skin Health, in Phoenix or Marina’s Beauty Salon in Nogales…just a pit stop on your way across the border to Mexico for a summer vacation at the ocean.

As usual…below is information from the company for your to peruse and enjoy plus use for fact checking for yourself. To visit the website go to

To get your anti-aging hands on a free bottle of AminoGenesis Perfect Reflection anti-aging serum…please send an email entry ( one per household please) to makeupbycherelynn at yahoo dot com
Answer these questions:
1. What’s an amino acid
2. Who created this line and why
3. How can you purchase your second bottle of Perfect Reflection
4. Where did you see this article
The free product promotion runs from today through June 19th with a random winner being selected from the total number of entries received, then a winner is announced by email on June 20th, 2008.

Enjoy! It’s always my favorite part of beauty blogging to give to you freely what has been given to me!

Now, for the companies view of their product:
AminoGenesis Skin Care is leading the way by developing the first amino acid-based skincare line. According to AminoGenesis founder Ron Cummings, “what Americans are searching for has been within their own skin the entire time, they just have been suffering from a deficit in amino acids, which are crucial to the creation of collagen and elastin – both of which are known as key factors in the appearance of the skin.”

o Ceramide 2: This nutrient penetrates rapidly to bolster and strengthen crucial skin connective tissues to improve the appearance of sagging, discoloration, dryness, and other signs of aging.
o Ubiquinone: The most powerful antioxidant in the world, with the ability to help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of aging.
o Amino-acid Ogliopetides: Clinical trials revealed this amino acid complex actually triggers the skin’s own collagen making and repair mechanism to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, often caused by sun damage.

• Perfect Reflection: AminoGenesis’ Perfect Reflection anti-aging serum combines four powerful anti-oxidants (vitamin A, C, D and CoQ10) with AminoGenesis’ base formula of 17 amino acids. This silky smooth water-based formula penetrates the skin rapidly delivering moisture and skin-rejuvenating nutrients for the most beautiful, youthful and healthy skin possible! Price: $69

About AminoGenesis Skin Care
AminoGenesis Skin Care was founded in 2000 after creator Ron Cummings, a longtime sufferer of dermatitis, was recommended a cream for his skin condition. Once he learned everything he could about that cream he used, Ron decided to make the life-changing decision to end his existing career and enter the unfamiliar business of skincare. He learned that the cream was actually a potent mixture of amino acids, essentially the building blocks of all life. All living things, plant or animal, that grows on this planet share exactly the same amino acids – it is the arrangement of amino acids that makes everything and everyone unique. They are the building blocks of every structure in human skin; vital skin proteins like collagen, elastin, lipids and all cellular tissues are made from amino acids. The basis of the AminoGenesis philosophy is that skin functions fantastically when it is properly nourished and it is with amino acids that skin becomes properly nourished. Several years ago the team of world class doctors, chemists and researchers that Ron enlisted set out to harness the power of amino acids. After about a decade of research and testing, the original AminoGenesis formula was born and the results astounded even those who created it.

Beauty for bicycles...believe it!

Hello friends!
This was sent to me today by Whole Foods and they have some pretty amazing botanical skin care, though, after reading this, you’ll see that they are doing a “whole” lot more than just providing great foods and products. Enjoy the information and if it’s in your heart to get involved, dive in!
Alaffia Prepares Shipment of 2,000 Bicycles Slated for Disadvantaged Students in Togo, West Africa

Olympia, WA, June 2, 2008 – During the past 18 months, Alaffia Sustainable Skin Care has collected more than 2,000 used bicycles with the help of local volunteers and natural foods stores. On July 8, 2008, Alaffia will send their second shipment of bicycles to Togo, West Africa, where they will be distributed to disadvantaged students, mainly girls. Alaffia’s Bicycles for Education program is designed to encourage rural youth to stay in school by providing transportation to students who walk up to 10 miles a day to attend school.

The Bicycles for Education program is critical for empowering youth and decreasing poverty in Togo, where the average yearly income is less than $300. While the majority of girls and boys in Togo complete primary school, attendance drops off rapidly in higher grades. According UNICEF, 90% of girls in rural areas drop out before finishing secondary school. The time and energy required to walk to school are deterrents to continuing school for girls, who have more household chores than boys. Olowo-n’djo Tchala, founder of Alaffia and Togolese native, states “We believe that these bicycles will provide an incentive for girls to remain in school”.

Togo will not be able to move out of poverty without educating its youth. The lack of education in the female population leads to the continuation of gender and economic inequalities. “We feel it is especially important to empower our female students, and for this reason, this second shipment will be primarily distributed to female students in 50 different villages. I strongly believe that our communities in West Africa will gain the tools for self-empowerment through projects that encourage respect and gender equality” says Tchala.

For additional information on the Alaffia Bicycles for Education project, contact Olowo-n’djo Tchala or visit

ABOUT ALAFFIA – Olowo-n’djo Tchala founded Alaffia in 2004 as a means to support community empowerment projects in his native Togo. Alaffia manufactures natural shea butter personal care products in Olympia, WA. The shea butter is produced in Togo by Alaffia’s fair trade certified cooperative and shipped to Olympia, where is it the primary ingredient in Alaffia’s premium handmade skin moisturizers, soaps and hair care products. Alaffia products are available at health and natural food stores, including co-ops and Whole Foods Markets, across the United States.
Okay guys, so, are you going to get involved or what?

Recycle your lip color and the model test shoots

Creating lip gloss where there once was none
Okay, so the news is reporting that everything is going south in a hand basket. Sure, gas is high, jobs are scarce and you need to get a fresh look on a pinch back budget.

What to do?

Well, you and I both know that you have a ton, I mean a ton of half used lip products from glosses to lipsticks lurking somewhere in your handbag, desk drawer, bathroom drawer and I would even go so far as to say your glove compartment.
Nothing goes to waste in my kit. I keep plastic snap lid pallets around for this very reason. If you don’t have any, a pill box, the kind that is marked with the days of the week will work also.

I would separate them one for lipsticks and one for glosses and if you want to take it a step further, categorize them from their finish: ie: matte, semi-matte, gloss, moisturizing, get the idea?

Scrape the “bullet” which is that little bit of product used to secure the lipstick into the tube so it can be twisted up by the base, and press it into the pill box or plastic pallet.

Do some good smooshing and mashing of the product to make it soft and pliable. A good home made tool for getting the bullet out is a qtip snapped in half, then use a plastic spatula that is made for cosmetics. Most likely one came with your eye cream or night cream if they are in jars and not air tight pumps.

Once the lipstick is crammed in, consider mixing colors and finishes to create new colors for your summer look.

The possibilities are endless!

Not to mention, now you have several shades and lip looks in one container. Pack this in a snack sized Ziploc baggie with a retractable lip brush and a nude liner and you have a beauty pallet that can go from casual to business to night time party til the wee hours all in one!

Plus, in a real tight jam, some of that lip product could be dabbed onto cheeks and substitute for a rouge if you don’t carry any with you.
See, necessity is always the mother of invention!

Thanks for stopping by and reading the blog, check through the stories for all the freebie product giveaways going on right now…and…if you are a model building a portfolio, I’m going to be doing the model test shoot that is coming up in two weeks. There are 5 spaces available for a sunset photo session.
I’m planning my favorites: beachy waves and bronze looks mixed with pin up! If you want one of the slots with me as your artist, just email me your contact number and I’ll pencil you in. Cash is preferred, though, paypal will do too!

Neutrogena summer lip look and a freebie for you!

Summer lip look and a freebie for you!

I’ve been talking about the Neutrogena lip gloss and lip sheer for some time now, and here’s your chance to get one for yourself courtesy of Neutrogena and Makeup University.

Below, are some details from the company, but first, my opinion! Of course!

I sampled both and actually liked the gloss more. You know, I’m a gloss girl.
But! For those of you who like a lipstick but feel it is too much product for the summer, the lip sheer is for you!

Both of these lip products from Neutrogena provide much needed sun protection in dual spectrum coverage of spf 20.

Both are hydrating on the mouth, give a cooling sensation, don’t travel around ( this means the product color doesn’t crawl out of the lip line or upwards towards your nostril) and they are not sticky.

I liked the slip, feel, texture and light scent of the soother and lip sheer. I think what I like best is the subtle color that can be worn alone or over a lip stick for your night time makeup.

I think these are perfect for destination weddings, out door gatherings, swimming, camping, or just about anywhere you go that has sun and your lips need a fresh summer look.
There are three new colors for summer, and I bet if you enjoy this product, there may be new colors for fall too! You can get Neutrogena products at most mass retailers, drugstores,
discount stores, and always online!

Here are the company details on the product and check out below for the freebie giveaway rules:

NEUTROGENA MOISTURESHINE LIP SOOTHER SPF 20 is a dermatologist-developed, conditioning gloss that couples the benefits of a lip balm with the high-shine of your favorite lip gloss, plus broad-spectrum SPF protection. These non-stick, sheer and shiny hues offer a fruity fragrance that smells as great as it looks.

NEUTROGENA MOISTURESHINE LIP SOOTHER SPF 20 is packed with healthy, soothing botanicals and plant extracts. Moisture-rich, glycerin hydragel treats and protects lips instantly. When applied, NEUTROGENA MOISTURESHINE LIP SOOTHER SPF 20 provides a cooling and refreshing sensation.

This double-duty lip product provides a splash of beautifully sheer, shimmering color with the soothing, therapeutic benefits of a traditional lip balm. Housed in a sleek metal case, NEUTROGENA MOISTURESHINE SOOTHING LIPSHEERS SPF 20 feature a slim silhouette for easy application.

NEUTROGENA MOISTURESHINE SOOTHING LIPSHEERS SPF 20 are formulated with menthyl lactate, a naturally derived, peppermint flavoring that delights lips with a cooling sensation on contact. This dermatologist developed, advanced hydrating formula contains super-refined emollients to restore moisture levels in the lips, while antioxidant Vitamin E works to soften and hydrate. NEUTROGENA MOISTURESHINE SOOTHING LIPSHEERS SPF 20 are formulated with broad-spectrum SPF to help safeguard against additional dryness and damage. The result is fuller, healthier looking lips.
