Celebrities' "Ugly Betty" Transformations

How hairstyles, makeup (and surgery?) makeovers have changed stars like Gwen Stefani and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz

Okay, so none of these women were ever ugly, but all of them used hair, makeup and even surgery to go from blah to stunning throughout their careers. In honor of the season premiere of "Ugly Betty" on ABC, we present our gallery of the most noticeable celebrity transformations. Do you like their original look or their new one better?

For all my friends in Israel who have access to Ahava products, and true Dead Sea salt therapies...you are the lucky ones!
For the rest of us who have to rely on imports, get your hands on Ahava eye makeup remover when you can. Don't wait and say you'll get it next time...it's too good to pass up and the chance that it will be there later is slim!

This is an amazing day of celebration, so pass the challah!

In other beauty news: as we cross over in to October, Fall and weather in Arizona that just may approach two digits: it's time to have a pre-party strategy for your Holiday party looks and events.

If you need help getting a halloween or Harvest festival makeup together, give me a call.

There are several workshops coming up that can teach you how to do amazing party makeup that is simple and uses the products you already own. Don't get caught at the last minute trying to juggle family, events, work and a party! Plan your style and beauty ahead of time!

There is a huge Oktoberfest this weekend in the area...so I just may see you out and about.

Happy Monday!
Wow, what a weekend. It was intense work to say the least! I did the West Valley wedding expo months ago with Jennyvi Dizon a local couture wedding dress designer and the photo has just surfaced.
Enjoy.
This past Sunday, Jennyvi did the East Valley wedding expo,so hopefully soon, there will be some photos of what is current and coming out for the Fall bridal season.

In the meantime...back at the beauty ranch...the daily beauty bit is about Emmy style. According to news reports and Nielsen ratings, the viewership was low. I know I didn't watch.

Click through to see who wore what and where...

As for us, the every day ladies keeping in touch with what's great for skin care and cosmetics: I can truly say after this weekends long hot sunny event, that water is a girls' best friend when it comes to youth. Staying hydrated from the inside out keeps the skin looking healthy and pair that with good serums and moisturizers; you'll be reflecting the fountain of youth in no time!
Enjoy the beginning of your week!

I actually like a sweet flowery smell in my shower! What I love most about the daily beauty bits link is that you get a real review from a real person, just like me, who has actually bought it and used it.

Enjoy the personal opinion and post yours too!

So, I'm having an "estate" sale tomorrow, and a ton of my makeup kit goods are up for grabs before they reach their expiration date. Yes, makeup has an expiration date.

So come see me at Halifax and Mesa dr in Mesa...

In the meantime, tell me what you are using now, what's working and what's awful!
Speaking of...have you been watching Dancing with the Stars? I didn't see the Wednesday night elimination round, but what I can tell you so far, is that this season is in no way shape or form as strong as two seasons ago when Helio was on.

Alas, at least they have their false lashes on. I had mine on yesterday and it's funny how it makes people do a double take when they see you...and try and figure out "what's different about her face?". It's a good thing!

Remember, the best time to buy lashes in bulk for the Holiday party season and beyond is November 1st...right after Halloween.

More to come!

Ah hah! Hair success! I went to Alli at the Superstition Springs ULTA on Hampton. I was using the coupon from the local ad, free hair cut with color. So, it's my second trip to her, and the first one I used a coupon too. This was to ensure that if the event was horrible, at least I wouldn't have paid alot for it!

Actually, I can recommend Alli with a smile and confidence that she will do right by your style.

I got the same color, Redken Shades EQ in 3NB. This is a demi permanent color that when baggied on the head and baked up under the dryer can cover gray, roots, deposit color and protect the hair integrity...all in 30 minutes!

I came out with a heavy bang, shorter length to try and cut off some of the bleached damage from last February!!! I"m happy. Is it wow? No. But it's still good and the coupon is in the paper and you can print it off of the ULTA website under "current ad".

If you live in the East Valley, try Alli for your cut and color.

Now: this coming weekend is Jennyvi's East Valley Bridal show and it's going to be amazing. I"m not doing the makeup because I'm booked for another gig, but...still go and see some of the freshest couture that is affordable and local, plus pick up a free fat swag bag!

Also: my weekly makeup workshops are up, as well as the October 7th Makeup 101 workshop at the Fresh Start Women's Foundation is still booking and....drum roll please...
I will be doing a Fall class at FORD Robert Black for new models as well as a large modeling search event at the Scottsdale Hyatt at Gainey Ranch.
Stay tuned for booking details and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Ah, yet another new haircut

Bridal Makeup DIY Style: How To Take Control of Your Wedding Day Beauty for brides who would rather spend the money on cake!

Hi, I know, I know. I never posted the last new hair cut I got and it's because I don't have the cable that goes from the camera to my laptop...instead, I have to do this whole rig-a-ma-ro to get the pictures out of Gigcard hell and onto my page.

Sooo.....I tell you all this because I am going for another hair cut and color today to update my look for new media head shots being taken tomorrow.

Stop screaming! I know the horror! A new color and cut the day before a shoot? Am I looney? No, just short on time.

Either way, I"ll try again for the photos...promise.

I am going to the same gal who did it the last time, Ally, at Ulta at Superstition Springs. They have a coupon, buy a color get a free hair cut. So I'm really motivated.

If you haven't tried Ally at SS Ulta, it's worth the coupon and freebie. More details to come....

Celebrities Spotted at Fashion Week

Forget the models! We couldn't take our eyes off of Victoria Beckham, Lindsay Lohan and Keira Knightley at Bryant Park

Celebrities Spotted at Fashion Week

This week stars fled the red carpet and headed for Bryant Park in New York City for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. We couldn't get enough of all the celebrities in the front rows at the shows and their gorgeous hair and makeup looks.

See celebrities

Fashion week is over and we now know what will be coming for Spring. But what about today? And since it's celebrites that are always setting trends, what about the everyday lady?

I sometimes wonder what would be d ifferernt about society if the elite of Rome did not set the tone for style and have time mixed with century dribble it down to a week in New York City with designers from around the world showing the rest of us what to wear.

I think that in the highways and biways of life, there are everyday ladies and men making style and strides forward in community and life. We just don't see it on the cover of rag mags at the check out stand in the supermarket.

If you have a fashion statement or invention that you think is world and life changing, post it!

For the rest of us: it's Fall, in Arizona it's still too hot to wear the current Fall trend. In fact, I just did a fashion show and all the clothes were sweaters, pants, heavy scarves and trench coats. Great.

All those borrowed clothes were sweaty! Wow! Thank God for febreze.

In Arizona, if it's still too hot to wear the Fall clothes you bought, just mix your sweaters and cardigans with shorts. yes, it's still short season.

More soon!

Disheveled fall hairstyles better known as my everyday hair

TotalBeauty.com content:

Hot Runway Hairstyles

From classic updos to perfectly disheveled waves, here's a sampling of some our fave hairstyles from the spring '09 fashion shows

The hair trends for spring are already being determined for us by the hair geniuses backstage at New York Fashion Week. Think sleek buns, beachy textured hair extensions, braids and twists. You'll never be bored with your hair if you try these styles.

View hairstyles

I love Fridays! Thank God it's Friday! And that disheveled hair is in! I have the choppy bob cut, and it's okay. I long for my long sleek hair that I used to have, though; ce la vie. It's only hair and it will, eventually grow back.

Today there is a daily beauty byte for you to click through on and get some pointers on how to updo your Fall hair style.
They are nice and messy, sloppy do's that can add style, flair and variety to your normal hair day.

Get ready for the launch of major cosmetic lines "color stories" that will accompany the fall beauty trends.

Remember, one piece can update an entire face, so go for one that you love, instead of buying several that you wont' use and will end up in a drawer and have a friend called buyer's remorse.

In the Phoenix area: remember that JennyVi and the East Valley bridal show is going on next weekend plus there are several scenes to be seen at.

As for me: I'm currently using a pink creme blush under a compact powder foundation with a sheer deep berry toned mouth and my hair is always some form of messy.
Oh! I'm so in style!
Enjoy the beauty byte and more for ya tomorrow!

Foundation! The Foundation of your Face!

TotalBeauty.com content:

Makeup: Gold Medal-Worthy Foundations

One of these 14 crowd pleasers from Revlon, Prescriptives, MAC and more could give your skin a flawless finish -- sans airbrush experts

We've heard complaints about foundation ranging from too heavy and drying to too light and oily, not to mention "too few shades" and "too expensive." So we made a list of the foundations that garnered praise from TotalBeauty.com members. Check out which brands and formulas got the most consumer stamps of approval and consider whether you should switch to something new.

Best foundations

Foundation is well, the foundation of your makeup. I say all great faces start with great skin and that gives the foundation a head start on creating an amazing face.

I have some personal favorites: number one being ERA Face by Classified Cosmetics. Close seconds are: the Line Defiance by Arbonne, tinted moisturizer by Aveda, Jane Iredales' mineral powder and when it comes to a L'Oreal, Revlon, Rimmel or Maybelline; well, I just haven't used those in a long time to be able to comment accurately.

But, from back in the day: as a young teenager, my most fave and it's still in my kit is the pan makeup from Max Factor. Talk about old school! It still works great and has amazing coverage and finish.

I love some of Dior's, some Chanel and don't use Clinique at all. If you havea favorite foundation, write in and tell me!

I have a travel brush set from Adesign promotion starting on Friday...so stay tuned for your free gift set of brushes!

Okay, I love hearing from you about your home hair coloring experiences. Something for you to think about if you are a first time home colorist or have damaged hair and damaged budget and can't afford to go to the salon, consider a trip to the Sally's beauty supply near you. www.sallybeauty.com

You can research what it is that you are looking for online at their website and then go in and have some ammo for what you are looking for. Otherwise it's like walking into a candy store and making a decsion could be hard.

I offer this up as an alternative to the box of stuff from the mass retailer because if you've been following my blog, you know the year long challenge I have had in restoring my hair from the badly bothced bleach job. The kind that can ruin careers!

Now, my hair is still on my scalp, slowly coming back, and finally, I am at what I call, the "final cut". The last cut that will truly take off all of the burnt bleach hair from last February. That means it will still be short, ( nothing wrong with short hair, I just love long hair on me) though most importantly, it will be healthy.

I love long, healthy shiny hair! Back to color: so what I do instead of going to the salon for a $60 glaze, I get the ION brand semi glaze super hydra drench color. It has no ammonia, no peroxide, no harmful ingredients and actually deposits color only along with moisturizers.

If you are coloring with in one to two shades, this is a good product for you. Clairol and Wella make similiar products, at Sally's they are about $5. The effect will last great for four weeks, then around week 5 you will see fading and by week six you have some grey, roots and faded color and it's time to do your hair again.

I prefer a baggie on my head, with added heat to intensify the color. Enjoy!

**BEAUTY NEWS ALERT***
Right now there is a lot of buzz and talk about the new "baked" makeups. This is fun, though not new, just new advertising. Chanel and Dior have been baking pans of makeup for decades. The difference is, in the new lines that are baking they are mixing colors and letting the pigments swirl together for a multi-faceted shade.

I think it's fun and I'm interested in trying some! Check out Sephora for some choices or head out to your local Ulta or beauty store. Enjoy your Tuesday!

Feria at home hair color: the results of the at home tests

TotalBeauty.com content:

Feria Colour Parties: Vote for Your Favorite, Sponsored by Feria

Feria Multi-Faceted Shimmering Colour

L'Oréal Paris has launched a new ultra-conditioning and extra shimmering version of its popular Féria Multi-Faceted Shimmering Colour with 3X highlights. More hydrating and conditioning than ever, new Féria transformed the hair of these Total Beauty bloggers and readers. Some dramatic and some subtle, the overall results left our testers' hair shimmery and soft. What do you think? Use our rating system to tell us who has the best hair color transformation.

See photos

Happy Monday! You know, I get more accomplished on a Monday than I do most other days!
Todays' beauty byte is all about the home hair coloring system Feria by L'Oreal. If you have tried to color your hair at home you know that it rarely ever looks like the picture on the box.
For those of you who do color at home and have success, here is a brand to try and possibly increase your satisfaction with the at home hair coloring treatment you do.
The Feria line is called "multi-faceted" because it adds a layer of shine to the hair, and truly does come out with a depth to the color instead of being flat.
Think of it like wall paint: some dry flat and matte looking, others have a semi-shine finish and curb appeal!
There are coupons for the product in the local Sunday paper, plus some can be found online.
A rule of thumb when coloring your hair at home:
1. Stay with in one to two shades of your natural color
2. Don't do platinum blondes at home
3. Don't do dark colors such as deep browns or blacks at home.

I know there are many of you who have done your platinums to the point of being white blonde at home, and others of you who have blackened up your Cure colored hair in the bathroom before a concert.

I'm sure it turned out a version of great, though the caution is because when you bleach out and tone hair, you are working at the core shaft level of the hair and the chance for destruction is evident.

Why you don't do super dark colors at home is because of how the pigment adheres to the hair strand. Depending on the condition of your hair, it can actually color darker in some places and lighter in others. Hence, the need for a professional.

If you look at the L'Oreal coloring main page where you can find out more about Feria, it will also have hair coloring help and information. And for once, why don't you try calling the 1-800 number on the box and talk to them about your hair color quest at home.

Good luck and enjoy. Send pics if you've got 'em!
